Half of my heart is in Havana...

Updated: Jun 9, 2020

I had no expectations when going to Cuba, no one I know had ever gone to Havana and so all I really knew was what I had seen on Fast and Furious 8 (lets be honest thats how we are able to see most countries). But honestly stepping out into Havana is like stepping back in time. Even though most parts of Havana are being modernised, Old Havana looks like it has not left the 1950s, but that is one the of reasons you fall in love with it.

Day 1

On our first full day there we did a tour of Havana in two beautiful old cars, if like you had have no idea what you exactly want to see in Havana, I would definitely recommend this tour. We booked our whole holiday through Holiday Place, so this is who we booked the tour with too. Our tour guide spoke perfect English and he tailored the tour around what we wanted to do e.g. adding in the making of Havana Club tour. Added bonuses, our guide was hilarious, explained everything so clearly and knew all the answers to our questions. The cars were gorgeous, definitely the best way to see Havana.

I love the different textures and colours of the older buildings, this is the perfect example of where old cobble roads meet fossilised rock walls. Also I took about 50 photos in front of this wall because it was the perfect background.

Day 2

We used the second day to really explore Old Havana. We spent the day wandering around the old streets, getting lost in the residential areas and finding our way back using a physical map (there’s no data there i.e. no google maps!).

For lunch we found this awesome brewery called La Taberna de La Muralla, which was also a cafe and has a live band (most restaurants/bars do in Havana). We ordered, what we thought was, a jug of beer and received this:

The other place we went to which I would highly recommend was Floridita. It is the home of the Daiquiri and one of Ernest Hemmingway’s main bars. It has an awesome vibe and the band is amazing. The cocktails are a bit more expensive than most places, but they have 10 -15 different flavours and they are definitely worth a try.

Day 3

We went to Veradero in the afternoon, but we spent the morning on the Malicon, you only need a hour or two to walk up and down it. The Malicon is a long wall separating the land and sea where people gather to fish/sunbathe/meet with friends etc. Generally somewhere for Cuban’s to chill. It was nice to walk down see the different types of people living in Havana and spot some fish/crabs in the sea.

Overall, I really enjoyed Havana, but I don't think you need anymore than 5 days there too explore the city. Not having an internet the whole time was a blessing in disguise! The food was less that desirable, as it is bland but you can't have it all. Honestly, it is a place worth visiting!

Stay safe out there.
