A New Kind of Pet - Borneo

Updated: Nov 17, 2020

One project our group were very involved with in Camp Bongkud, was we the building of the duck area: pond and duck house. We finished this project in 2 days and had the pleasure of seeing the ducks we had bought and raised over the week take their first dip in the pool.

When we found the ducks at a market in Ranau we were appalled by the conditions they were kept in. They were about 30 ducklings in one cage. They were literally climbing over each other. They looked like they hadn't been fed in days and were just in a poorly state. The group couldn't bare to see them in such a bad way so we bought 5 (now we wish we'd bought more! But that's for the next volunteers to do) : Gemima (yellow) Pistl (yellow chest) Rex (grey-brown) Honey Baby (smallest) We fed and bathed them and after a day they looked 10 times better than they had the day before.

After looking after them and building the duck area for them I was definitely sad that we had to leave them! Never been so attached to animals before but they definitely have a special space in my heart. I know they'll be well looked after by all the camp staff and I really hope future volunteers will love them as much as we do!

Stay safe out there.
