10 items you MUST take in your bag on your next solo trip

Updated: Apr 10, 2023

Thinking about going on a solo trip soon? Well as someone who has lived out of a backpack for 2 years+ there are a few things I wish I knew I needed before leaving. So here is my list of things you will need to have before leaving on your next trip:

1. Portable Charger: https://amzn.to/3iDFcMg

This is so much more important than you think it is. It is particularly useful when you're traveling for long amounts of time. Not all buses/trains/planes have something for you to plug your phone into. I've also found generally my phone runs out of battery a lot quicker in hotter countries, so having that portable charger will be useful when you don't even realize you need it. One of the most frustrating things is being on like a night bus or a long journey and not having something to keep you entertained.

2. Micofibre Towel: https://amzn.to/2ZJJusQ

This fast drying towel is so useful when travelling. It stops you from having to rent towels in hostels (yes it is not free!), it compacts so it does not take up a lot of room in your backpack and it dries fast so you can put it in your bag. It can be used in multiple different ways: as a towel, a blanket and a sarong (if you need too).

3. Kindle/Reading Device: https://amzn.to/31TrsXP

Carrying around a book, especially if you like to read large novels while you're traveling is a nightmare. So a reading device, like the kindle, will be your best friend. They are small, portable and most importantly their battery lasts a long time (which is especially good if you love reading on the beach or on a bus).

4. Reusable Ziplock bags: https://amzn.to/31TgMII

These are really going to be your best friend. They're so great for so many different things. Storing food which you haven't finished, packing a wet bikini so the rest of your clothes don't get wet or putting bottles in so that they don't leak all over your stuff. The possibilities are endless!

5. Shampoo Bar: https://amzn.to/3gE8ubE

Conditioner Bar: https://amzn.to/2Z8qqpd

These honestly, will save you time and space. They last longer than bottle shampoo and conditioner AND they take up less room. They are cheaper too - so if that is not enough reasons to buy them, then I don't know what is!

6. Nail Care Set: https://amzn.to/2Dnqfhr

It's not something you may remember or think is important but you will be surprised at how often you will be cutting your nails. These kits are only small, so they are easy to carry and the nail scissors and file will be useful for other things as well.

This mainly for people with long hair (obviously) BUT these are useful for more than tying your hair up. They're also good for keeping things together, well that's all I really think of, but you'd be surprised about how much stuff break when you're backpacking.

8. Compact Waterproof Jacket: https://amzn.to/2VZoQUG

I love my waterproof jacket. It has saved me so many times. Especially in tropical countries you don't always know when its going to rain. They're also wind proof and are a great top layer when you need to keep warm. Last think is they roll down into a very compact little bag and are really light!

9. Padlocks: https://amzn.to/2ZQmZ5L

More specifically a combination padlock. You need these to lock your stuff up in hostels and for day trips - if you are going to a waterpark or somewhere that you cannot take all your stuff.

10. Spare Wired Earphones: https://amzn.to/3iGSXde

Most people nowadays have AirPods or at least wireless headphones. But I would also suggest taking wired headphones. These are great when you are on the plane, you don't have to use their useless headphones or if you wireless headphones run out of battery. I would also suggest using wired headphones when in 'rougher' areas, as that is where you are more likely to be targeted, especially if you have expensive wireless headphones in your ears.

I hope this has helped and has inspired you to make sure you have packed right,
